Getting ready for the season

I can't believe our season is almost upon us. I've been crazy busy finishing up the academic year at both of the schools where I teach, UC Berkeley and Cal State East Bay. Berkeley finished about 2 weeks ago, CSU-East Bay doesn't end until the day I fly to Madison! In between all the "closing gestures" for both schools, I've been practicing like a fiend.

It's wonderful to get to play so much Schumann and Chopin. I've always loved playing their solo piano music, and this year was a great excuse to play a lot of their chamber music. It is SO satisfying—both composers know the piano so well, they write so idiomatically for the instrument. That said, they also can write passages that are so hard they just kick your butt. I guess that's what practice is for!
